first,i'dliketothankthecommissionandmyopponentsforparticipatinginthesedebatesandmakingthempossible.ithinktherealwinnersofthedebatesweretheamericanpeople.iwasespeciallymovedinrichmondafewdaysago,when209ofourfellowcitizensgottoaskusquestions.theywentalongwaytowardreclaimingthiselectionfortheamericanpeopleandtakingtheircountryback.iwanttosay,sincethisisthelasttime,i'llbeonplatformwithmyopponents,thateventhough,idisagreewithmr.perotonhowfastwecanreducethedeficitandhowmuchwecanincreasetaxesinthemiddleclass,ireallyrespectwhathe'sdoneinthiscampaigntobringtheissueofdeficitreductiontoourattention.i'dliketosaythatmr.busheventhoughihavegotprofounddifferenceswithhim,

idohonorhisservicetoourcountry.iapPciatehiseffortsandiwishhimwell.ijustbelieveit'stimetochange.iwantacountrywherepeople,whoworkhardandplaybytherules,arerewarded,notpunished.iwantacountrywherepeoplearecomingtogetheracrossthelinesofraceandregionandincome.iknowwecandobetter.itwon'ttakemiraclesanditwon'thappenovernight,butwecandomuch,muchbetter,ifwehavethecouragetochange.

首先，我要感謝組委會(huì)，感謝參加這次論辯的同仁對(duì)手，有了這一切才使我們這次論辯有可能進(jìn)行。我想我們這場(chǎng)論辯的真正贏者是美國(guó)人民。幾天前，我在里士滿時(shí)特別受感動(dòng)，因?yàn)橛?09名市民向我發(fā)問。他們對(duì)美國(guó)人民開拓這次選舉及重組國(guó)會(huì)是大有好處的。既然這是最后一次，我得說我決意與同仁對(duì)手們齊驅(qū)并進(jìn)。盡管我不贊成皮爾特關(guān)于加快減少財(cái)政赤字，提高對(duì)中產(chǎn)階級(jí)課稅的做法，但我還是感謝他能把減少赤字的問題提出來，以引起人們的關(guān)注。盡管我與布什的見解相去甚遠(yuǎn)，我還是十分敬佩他為這個(gè)國(guó)家的效勞和努力。我感謝他的努力。我祝愿他身體健康。不過，我相信現(xiàn)在應(yīng)該是改革的時(shí)候了。我要建立一個(gè)這樣的國(guó)家，她的人民勤奮工作，按規(guī)則辦事，能得到報(bào)酬，而不是得到懲罰。我也想建立這樣一個(gè)國(guó)家，她的人民無論是什么種族、住在什么地區(qū)、收入多少都能和睦相處。我知道我們能搞得更好，那不需要奇跡，但那也不是一夜之間就可發(fā)生的事。只要我們有勇氣改革，我們就能搞得更好。
